Reimagining how Materials are Used to Drive Circularity

At CRH, we are committed to delivering a more resilient built environment, one that encompasses the principles of the circular economy.

As a leader in the use of wastes and by-products from other industries as raw materials and fuels in our processes and products, CRH sees the circular economy as a growth opportunity for our business and a cornerstone to delivering solutions for the future.

For decades we have been collaborating with industry partners and innovating to drive materials efficiency across the life cycle of our products and the buildings and infrastructure made from them.

Delivering circular solutions

Michigan Paving & Materials (MPM), part of our Americas Division, is helping to deliver a durable, circular solution to the I-69 Design Build project. MPM are recycling the entirety of the old pavement into road base aggregate and warm mix asphalt (HMA) pavement to be reincorporated into the construction of the I-69 and surrounding projects.

Reimagining waste streams

CRH Ventures has invested in Carbon Upcycling Technologies (CUT), a company whose pioneering technology is helping to significantly lower CO2 emissions of production processes, allowing cement and concrete manufacturers to create more sustainable products. CUT’s first facility will be launched in partnership with Ash Grove, part of our Americas Division, at its Mississauga location.

Our Targets and Progress

95% of companies to have waste recycling programmes in place by 2030

Building on our leadership position in using waste and by-products from other industries, we are supporting the transition to a more circular economy by taking a collaborative, whole life approach to the design of products, buildings and infrastructure to eliminate waste, maximise resource efficiency and prolong the life-cycle of structures.

We are on track to achieve our targets:

  • To embed circularity within our business, we set a target for 95% of our operating companies to have waste recycling programmes in place by 2030, which we are proud to say we have achieved.
