Enhancing the Environment for Future Generations

We see ourselves as custodians of the natural world, embracing the opportunity to reverse nature loss and to leave a healthy environment that can support the needs of future generations.

Our holistic approach to environmental management aims to limit our environmental footprint and create a positive impact on the world around us, one that helps to accelerate the world towards a nature-positive economy.

Conserving and restoring forests

At CRH, we recognise the critical role forests play in biodiversity conservation and mitigating climate change, and we are committed to no net loss of our tree populations.

We comply with all relevant environmental regulatory and permitting requirements and all CRH extractive sites have comprehensive restoration plans. To support our biodiversity strategy, we engaged the Wildlife Habitat Council to assess our exposure to deforestation. Their evaluation concluded that our more than 1,200 extractive sites do not pose any risks to core forests.

Underlining our commitment to conserving and restoring forests, we have planted circa 1.2 million trees since 2018, ensuring we have achieved a net-positive impact on our tree populations.

Collaborating to enhance biodiversity

Demix Aggregates and Dufferin Aggregates, both part of our Americas Division, have partnered with Englobe, a consultancy specialising in soil and biomass treatment. Together they developed a soil treatment centre that has contributed to a reduction in illegal dumping and had a positive impact on the surrounding communities and environment.

Enhancing the environment to solve global challenges

Tarmac, part of our Europe Division in the UK, partnered with Natural England and the Stories in Stone Project to fund the restoration of a raised bog between Tarmac’s Arcow and Dry Rigg quarries in Yorkshire. The rewetting of the bog has led to record numbers of the great crested newt, a threatened species, as well as improving wildlife and carbon sequestration potential.

Supporting biodiversity through restoration

Restoring land and protecting biodiversity are among our highest priorities. Jura Materials, part of our Europe Division, has created a thriving natural habitat in the landfill at their Tannlinoos location in Switzerland. The landfill contributes to the preservation of rare plants and animals and has become a protected natural and agricultural area.

Partnering for biodiversity preservation

Our Americas Division has partnered with the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a non-profit group that combines conservation and business, since 2004. Recently, Hallett Materials in West Des Moines, Iowa was awarded the landscaped project award from the WHC, for their Booneville Pollinator Garden that supports pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Our Targets and Progress

Ongoing reduction of NOx, SOx and Particulate air emissions at cement plants
100% of locations in sensitive areas to have a Biodiversity Management Plan by 2030

Clean air is one of our priorities, not only for the sustainability of our business, but for the continued protection of people and our natural world. This is why we are committed to reducing the impact of air emissions by ensuring that we meet the strictest air emissions limits.

As a responsible landowner, we recognise the importance of restoring land and protecting biodiversity. We strive to construct a nature-positive economy that is rich with resilient ecosystems and can adapt to and mitigate against the impacts of climate change. Thriving ecosystems are an essential part of a healthy natural world which is why we must take decisive action to enhance natural habitats. We do this by preserving biodiversity and natural capital across our locations, ensuring the long-term productivity of our operations.

Our 2022 performance:

  • Continued reduction in of NOx, SOx and Particulate air emissions at cement plants
  • 92% of locations in sensitive areas have a Biodiversity Management Plan in place
